Instrument Program

Mastering the FAA Instrument Rating

The FAA Instrument Rating (IR) takes you from a VFR pilot to an all-weather operator.

At D&J, we train you to operate with a level of precision that makes “marginal VMC” a non-event and “actual IFR” a professional routine.

Precision Over Reaction

Under Part 61, you need 50 hours of X-Country PIC and 40 hours of instrument time. We will make good use of those hours, teaching you to operate with precision.

Methodical Operation

You’ll move from reacting visually to operating by the book: briefing approaches, managing clearances, and staying three steps ahead of the airplane.

Technical Mastery

We focus on the “Big Three”: Intercepting and tracking navigation systems, holding patterns, and executing precision/non-precision approaches to minimums.

The Momentum Factor

Instrument skills are highly perishable. We recommend 3–4 sessions per week to keep your scan sharp and your “IFR brain” engaged.

Logbook Strategy

Most pilots have already knocked out a portion of their X-Country PIC time. We start with a structured review to see exactly how close you are to the finish line. Most students spend $10,900+ for this program.

The Workload

Expect heavy ground study on weather systems, IFR regulations, and glass-cockpit automation.

Is This the Right Flight Program for You?

This is for you if:

  • You’re pursuing a Commercial or Airline career
  • You want to fly through a cloud layer rather than turning around
  • You have the patience for structured, procedural flying

This isn’t for you if:

  • You prefer “seat of the pants” flying and dislike strict checklists
  • You can’t commit to the focus required to maintain a disciplined instrument scan

Professional Training Equipment and Facilities

IFR Proving Grounds: Orlando & Beyond

Training in Central Florida means you’re operating in one of the most complex airspace systems in the country. You won’t just practice approaches in a simulator; you’ll do them for real with ATC.

Orlando-Apopka (X04) & Sanford (SFB):

We utilize both towered and non-towered environments to simulate everything from quiet arrivals to high-workload Class C vectors.

The D&J IFR Fleet:

  • Piper Warrior & Archer: Our single-engine fleet is fully IFR-equipped with modern navigation and communication systems.
  • Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA): Train on the Garmin G1000 NXi. Mastering the GFC 700 autopilot and glass-cockpit logic now will save you months of frustration when you reach the regionals.

Your Next Step

An IFR Consultation

We don’t just start the engine; we plan the flight.

Your consultation will cover:

  • Logbook Audit: Identifying your current X-Country PIC and instrument time.
  • Written Exam Strategy: Getting the Instrument Rating Knowledge Test out of the way early.
  • Route Planning: A timeline projection based on your specific availability.
